Hand care for dentists and dental hygienists

Glove on, glove off, wash, sanitize, next patient. Chairside, your hands are gloved and washed all day, and by the last cleaning they’re dry and sore. We make glove-compatible, non-contaminating hand care that keeps the whole practice working comfortably.

What a day of patients does to your hands

Gloves and hand washing take a toll chairside

The habits that keep patients safe are hard on your hands. Here’s where the damage comes from, and what helps.

Problem 01

Gloved all day

Gloves trap sweat and friction for hours at a time. Roughly half of regular glove wearers end up with hand dermatitis.

Glove safety and compatibility →
Problem 02

Washing and disinfectants

Frequent washing and harsh disinfectants strip the skin’s oils, leading to irritation, dryness and flaking. Cracked skin is harder to keep clean.

Contact dermatitis →
Problem 03

Lotion that fights your gloves

Oil-based lotions with mineral oil, lanolin or glycerin can degrade latex. Use a water-based lotion made to go under gloves.

Field Notes

What a day chairside does to your hands

Five short animated chapters: the work, the exposure, what happens in the skin, why we built the product, and how to use it on the job.

Education, not medical advice. If your skin cracks, bleeds or won’t settle down, see a clinician.

CaptionThe loop at every chair: wash, glove, treat, gloves off, then do it again for the next patient.

01 · Chairside

Glove on, glove off, next patient

Cleanings, fillings, crowns, extractions. Your hands are gloved for every one of them, and they’re washed or sanitized every time the gloves come off. By the last appointment of the day that adds up to dozens of cycles.

Every step protects a patient. Together they’re hard on the hands doing them.

Dental infection-control guidance calls for hand hygiene before and after treating each patient, before gloving and after the gloves come off.CDC, Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health-Care Settings (2003)

CaptionInside a glove, sweat has nowhere to go and soaks the outer layer of skin. Then every wash between patients takes more of the oils and lipids (the yellow mortar) that hold that layer together.

02 · Under the glove

Sweat in, oils out

  • Skin cells
  • Oils and lipids
  • Sweat and water

The outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, is dead skin cells held together by natural oils and lipids. Picture bricks and mortar. The mortar holds moisture in and keeps irritants out.

Gloves trap sweat and friction against that layer for the length of a procedure. Then frequent washing and disinfectants strip the oils away. Irritation, dryness and flaking follow.

CaptionWith the mortar gone, moisture escapes, irritants work their way in, and the skin underneath reddens and cracks.

03 · What develops

Irritant contact dermatitis

  • Water escaping
  • Irritants

Keep exposing skin to water, soap, disinfectants and the inside of a glove and the barrier breaks down. That’s irritant contact dermatitis. It starts as redness, itching and dryness and can progress to cracking and blistering.

Cracked skin is harder to keep clean, and sore hands make every wash between patients harder to keep up with.

There’s a second type, allergic contact dermatitis, where skin becomes sensitized to something it touches, including some glove materials. If your hands won’t heal, get them looked at.

CaptionMineral-oil and petroleum lotions soak into latex and weaken it. A water-based lotion like I.C. Lotion goes on under the glove without breaking it down.

04 · Why we built it

Built to go under your gloves

Most lotions people bring from home weren’t made for clinical work. About 90% of them use mineral oils, and petroleum or mineral-oil products can break down latex gloves. So we built a water-based lotion that leaves those out, and alcohol-free sanitizers that don’t dry hands the way alcohol does.

I.C. Lotion, Fragrance Free

Purified DI water base. No silicones, lanolin, glycerin, mineral oils, fragrance or dye. Glove compatibility tested: use it before nitrile, latex or vinyl gloves. Lab-tested with CHG with no interference. Hypoallergenic. Dries with no oily residue.

I.C. Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer

Benzalkonium chloride foam that kills 99.99% of germs in as little as 15 seconds. Fragrance free and quick drying, with no sticky residue.

I.C. Hand Sanitizing Cream

Alcohol-free. Benzalkonium chloride 0.13% kills 99.99% of germs, and dimethicone 1.5% with shea and sunflower butters keeps hands moisturized while you sanitize.

Questions dental teams ask

Hand care for dental professionals: FAQ

Can I wear I.C. Lotion under gloves?
Yes. I.C. Lotions are pre-glove compatible with nitrile, latex and vinyl gloves and contain no silicones, lanolin, glycerin or mineral oils.
Will it interfere with CHG?
No. Testing showed I.C. Lotion does not interfere with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG).
Is there a hypoallergenic option?
Yes. I.C. Advanced Repair Hand Cream and I.C. Hand Sanitizing Cream were dermatologist tested in a 50-subject patch test (HRIPT) with no reactions, and are hypoallergenic.
What’s the difference between BZK and alcohol sanitizer?
Alcohol evaporates in seconds and leaves nothing behind on the skin. Our sanitizers are alcohol-free and use benzalkonium chloride (BZK) instead.
Can our practice get samples?
Yes. Request free samples for your team. You can buy through your distributor or on GSA.
