Ivy rash, also known as poison ivy rash, is an allergic reaction that occurs when the skin comes into contact with urushiol, the allergen found in poison ivy, oak, and sumac plants. When urushiol comes into contact with the skin, it causes a reaction that results in a rash, itching, and swelling.

Urushiol is a clear, oily substance that is found in the leaves, stems, and roots of poison ivy, oak, and sumac plants. It is highly potent and can cause an allergic reaction even in small amounts. When urushiol encounters the skin, it causes the immune system to release chemicals that cause inflammation and other symptoms of a poison ivy rash.

If you think you may have come into contact with poison ivy, oak, or sumac, it is important to take action right away to prevent a potential reaction. The first step is to remove any traces of urushiol from the skin. This can be done by washing the affected area with soap and water as soon as possible after exposure.
