How to Keep a Soldering Tip Clean and Make It Last

I.C. Tip Tinner tins, TIP-T 0.5 oz and TIP-2 1.5 oz, lead free and RoHS compliant

Short answer: A soldering tip dies when it oxidizes. Keep it coated in fresh solder, clean it on brass wool or a damp sponge (never steel wool or sandpaper), and re-tin it with a tip tinner whenever solder stops sticking.

Why tips go black

Heat plus air oxidizes the iron plating on the tip, and flux residue bakes on. A black tip won’t wet, so solder balls up instead of flowing.

Daily habits that make tips last

  • Tin the tip before you set the iron down and before you turn it off.
  • Use standby, or lower the temperature, when the iron is idle.
  • Wipe on brass wool or a damp, not wet, sponge.
  • Use the lowest temperature that does the job.
  • Don’t use the tip to pry or scrape.

Bringing a black tip back

Heat the iron. Push the tip slowly into the tip tinner and twist it as you drag it across the surface, so the tinner cleans off the oxide and lays down fresh tin. Wipe, then add a little fresh solder.

Why not steel wool or sandpaper?

They strip the iron plating. Once the plating is gone, the copper underneath erodes quickly and the tip is finished.

No-clean and water-soluble fluxes

Both are harder on tips. A tinner made for them helps prolong tip life.

I.C. Tip Tinner

I.C. Tip Tinner cleans and re-tins in one step and works with no-clean and water-soluble fluxes. It has no added lead: it’s made with tin. Our batch test (COA, batch 1613) measured lead at 459 ppm, a trace from the raw materials, under the RoHS limit of 1,000 ppm, so it’s RoHS compliant. It comes in 1/2 oz and 1-1/2 oz cans with adhesive backs that stay put on the bench. Use it with fume extraction, as you would for soldering.
