Hand cleaner and hand care for fleet mechanics

Grease, brake dust, diesel and used oil, then a road call where the nearest sink is back at the shop. Strong solvents get the grime off but leave your hands cracked. We make heavy-duty hand cleaners that take the grease off and hand care that keeps your hands working.

What a shift in the bay does to your hands

Grease comes off. Your skin shouldn’t.

Mechanics wash their hands more than almost anyone, and with the harshest stuff in the building. Here’s what gets in the way, and what helps.

Problem 01

Grease and grime, no sink

Road calls, yard work and the back of the truck. When the job is out of reach of the shop sink, a waterless cleaner you wipe off with a rag gets the grease and oil off before you touch the cab or your lunch.

Skin care do’s and don’ts →
Problem 02

Solvents and gloves all shift

Parts cleaner, degreaser and hours in nitrile gloves strip the oils out of your skin. Knuckles split, fingertips crack, and cracked hands are slower and harder to keep clean.

Problem 03

Cold bays and winter road calls

Open bay doors, cold steel and wet hands in winter dry skin out fast. A hand cream that protects chapped skin at the end of the shift keeps you working the next morning.

Field Notes

What the shop does to your hands

Five short animated chapters: the work, the exposure, what happens in the skin, why we built the product, and how to use it on the job.

Education, not medical advice. Your shop safety program and each product’s label come first. If your hands crack, bleed or won’t settle down, see a clinician.

CaptionA day in the bay: brake jobs under a truck on the lift, grease and brake dust on the hands, and road calls where the nearest sink is back at the shop.

01 · The work

Grease and brake dust

Fleet mechanics and shop techs spend the shift under the lift: brake jobs, grease, brake dust, diesel and used oil on the hands, worked into the creases and around the nails. Then a road call, where the nearest sink is back at the shop.

Mechanics wash their hands more than almost anyone, and with the harshest stuff in the building.

CaptionGrease and brake dust sit on the skin’s outer layer: skin cells (bricks) held together by natural oils and lipids (the yellow mortar). Parts cleaner and degreaser cut the grease, and take some of the mortar with it.

02 · The exposure

Degreaser doesn’t stop at the grease

  • Grease and brake dust
  • Parts cleaner, degreaser
  • Skin cells
  • Oils and lipids

The outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, is made of dead skin cells held together by natural oils and lipids. Picture bricks and mortar. The mortar holds moisture in and keeps irritants out.

Parts cleaner, degreaser and hours in nitrile gloves strip the oils out of your skin. Then comes a winter road call: an open side box, cold steel and wet hands. Knuckles split first.

Sources: R&R Lotion blog, Glove Safety and Compatibility in the Workplace (2022), Protecting Your Skin with Barrier Creams (2023) and Understanding Dry Skin in Winter (2024).

CaptionWith the mortar worn thin, moisture escapes, irritants work their way in, and the skin underneath reddens and cracks.

03 · What develops

Split knuckles, cracked fingertips

  • Water escaping
  • Irritants

Keep exposing skin to parts cleaner, degreaser and the inside of a glove and the barrier breaks down. That’s irritant contact dermatitis. It starts as redness, itching and dryness, and it can progress to cracking and blistering.

Knuckles split, fingertips crack, and cracked hands are slower and harder to keep clean on the next wash-up, so the cycle feeds itself.

There’s a second type, allergic contact dermatitis, where skin becomes sensitized to something it touches, including some glove materials. If your hands won’t settle down, get them looked at.

On the job, contact dermatitis shows up on the hands in about 80% of cases.Occupational contact dermatitis, as reported on the R&R Lotion blog (2023)

CaptionStep one: at the shop sink, a heavy-duty cleaner with micro scrubbers lifts grease, oil and grime off the skin. Step two: at the end of the shift, a dimethicone skin protectant goes on as a light layer over chapped hands.

04 · Why we built it

Built for the shop sink

Mechanics need a cleaner strong enough for grease and oil that rinses clean at the shop sink, a way to clean up on a road call with no water, and something for hands that are dry and rough from all of it.

I.C. Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner

Tough on grime, tough on germs. Micro scrubbers made of synthetic wax work into the creases and around the nails to lift tar, oil, grease, carbon, sap, ink and adhesives. Benzalkonium chloride 0.13%, an antibacterial, helps eliminate germs while you wash. Solvent-free, with no silicones, lanolin or mineral oil, and NSF registered (E2).

I.C. Antibacterial Waterless Hand Cleaner

No sink on a road call? Apply, scrub with the micro scrubbers, wipe off with a shop rag or towel. Removes grease, dirt and grime without water. Made with benzalkonium chloride to help remove germs from your hands.

I.C. Advanced Repair Hand Cream

A dimethicone skin protectant (dimethicone 4%) that helps prevent and temporarily protects chafed, chapped or cracked skin, and helps prevent and protect from the drying effects of wind and cold weather. Non-greasy and fragrance free.

Hand sanitizer doesn’t work well on hands that are visibly dirty or greasy. Greasy hands need the grease lifted off first.CDC, When and How to Wash Your Hands

CaptionFour moments on a shift: at the shop sink after a greasy job, on a road call with no sink, before you eat or climb back in the cab, and at the end of the shift.

When to use what

  1. 1
At the shop sinkGloves off. Pump I.C. Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner into dry hands, lather it into the creases and around the nails for at least 15 seconds, then rinse and dry.
  2. 2
On a road callNo sink at the side box: waterless hand cleaner. Apply, scrub, then wipe it off with a shop rag or towel.
  3. 3
Before lunch or the cabGet the grease off first, at the sink or with the waterless cleaner. Hand sanitizer on greasy hands isn’t a substitute.
  4. 4
End of the shiftClean hands, then I.C. Advanced Repair Hand Cream rubbed into dry knuckles and fingertips.

Follow each product’s label directions and your shop safety program. Gloves come off for washing. Put a gallon pump at the shop sink and a bottle of waterless cleaner in every service truck.

Questions mechanics ask

Hand cleaner for mechanics: FAQ

How do I get grease off my hands with no sink?
Use I.C. Antibacterial Waterless Hand Cleaner. Apply, scrub and towel off. The micro scrubbers lift oil and grime, and no rinse is needed, so it works on a road call or in the yard.
What’s the difference between the waterless cleaner and the heavy duty cleaner?
The waterless cleaner wipes off with a rag, for when there’s no water. I.C. Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner is a micro-scrubber cleaner for the shop sink that lifts grease, grime, oil and tar and rinses off with water.
Will a heavy-duty hand cleaner dry out my hands?
I.C. Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner is solvent-free, with skin conditioners to soften hands and help prevent drying. At the end of the shift, I.C. Advanced Repair Hand Cream helps prevent and temporarily protects chafed, chapped or cracked skin.
Do you make dispensers for the shop?
Yes. We make a gallon pump that fits our gallon containers and a 32 oz refillable wall dispenser, automatic or manual, for hand cleaners and lotions.
Can our fleet buy through GSA or get samples first?
Yes. R&R Lotion is on GSA MAS contract 47QSMS24D0078, and we send free samples to fleet, shop and safety managers.
