Sunscreen for construction workers

All day on the deck, in the sun, the heat and the brush, and your hands take the rest. Sunscreen is part of everyday PPE on a job site. We make the sun, bug, poison ivy and hand protection that keeps you working through the whole build.

What a job site does to your skin

Sun, heat and brush come with the job

Construction is one of the highest-risk outdoor trades for sun and heat. Here’s where the damage comes from, and what helps.

Problem 01

UV every day

Crews are outside the whole shift, and UV exposure adds up on the neck, ears and forearms. Daily sunscreen belongs in the PPE program with hard hats and vests.

PPE and sunscreen for outdoor workers →
Problem 02

Heat stacks up fast

At 100°F and 80% humidity the heat index reaches 158. A sunscreen that reflects heat as well as UV is part of a heat-stress plan.

Problem 03

Poison ivy on the tools

Clearing a site means brush. Urushiol, the oil in poison ivy, oak and sumac, can stay active on tools and equipment for up to 5 years.

For safety managers & superintendents

Make sun and skin protection part of PPE

OSHA covers many construction hazards, and sun, heat and insects are some of the most common. Put sunscreen and repellent in the gang box and a hand cleaner at the wash station. Tell us about your crews and we’ll send samples for the site.

Field Notes

What a job site does to your skin

Five short animated chapters: the work, the exposure, what happens in the skin, why we built the product, and how to use it on the job.

Education, not medical advice. If a mole changes, a cement burn blisters, or skin won’t settle down, see a clinician.

CaptionA day on the build: sun on the deck from first light to quitting time, and wet concrete and grime on the hands below.

01 · The work

Out in it all shift

Ironworkers on the deck, finishers on the slab, framers, roofers, laborers. The hard hat covers the top of your head, and that’s about it. The neck, ears, face and forearms take the sun all day, and the hands take everything else: wet concrete, grease, tar and grime.

Heat stacks on top of the sun. A shift in July puts a crew through hours of it with no shade on the steel.

OSHA’s heat guidance comes down to three words: water, rest, shade.OSHA, Heat Exposure

CaptionTwo kinds of sunlight reach a worker’s skin. UVB stops in the outer layers and is the main cause of sunburn. UVA travels deeper, into the dermis.

02 · Sun and heat

Two kinds of UV, two depths

  • UVB
  • UVA

UVB (280–320 nm) works on the outer layer of skin and is the main cause of sunburn. UVA (320–400 nm) reaches the deep layers of the dermis. About 95% of the UV that reaches the ground is UVA, and it gets through clouds and glass.

Heat makes it worse in a practical way: you sweat, and sweat and toweling off take sunscreen with them. Protection that holds through sweat, and a reapply schedule, matter as much as the SPF number.

CaptionTop: UV light damages the DNA inside a skin cell. Bottom: wet cement is strongly alkaline. Left on the skin, it works through the outer barrier and can burn the living skin underneath.

03 · What develops

Sunburn, DNA damage, cement burns

  • Damage
  • Wet cement

UV damages the DNA in skin cells. Over years of exposure, that damage and the cell’s repair errors raise the risk of skin cancer and age the skin early. Sunburn is the part you can see.

The three common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Check your skin with the ABCDE rule: asymmetry, irregular border, uneven color, diameter over 6 mm, and any change.

Wet cement is very alkaline and can burn skin, especially when it’s trapped against the skin inside a glove or a boot. The chromium in cement can also cause allergic contact dermatitis.

CaptionA hybrid sunscreen works two ways: non-nano zinc oxide particles (white) reflect and scatter UV, and organic filters absorb it before it reaches the skin.

04 · Why we built it

Built for the deck and the slab

Crews need a sunscreen that holds up to sweat, doesn’t leave a greasy film on tools and gloves, and isn’t a flammable aerosol. And at the end of the day they need a hand cleaner strong enough for job-site grime, then something for hands that are dry and cracked from it.

I.C. Industrial Sunscreen SPF 36

Broad spectrum SPF 36, 80-minute sweat and water resistant. A hybrid: non-nano zinc oxide plus organic UV filters, with no avobenzone. A lotion, not a spray. Rubs in clear and fragrance free.

I.C. Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner

A micro-scrubber hand cleaner that strips tar, oil, grease, sap and adhesives. Benzalkonium chloride helps decrease bacteria on the skin. Solvent-free and silicone-free.

I.C. Advanced Repair Hand Cream

A dimethicone skin protectant that helps prevent and temporarily protects chafed, chapped or cracked skin.

SPF and 80-minute water resistance were tested by an independent lab, AMA Laboratories, under the FDA method.AMA Laboratories, Lab No. N-0479 (2013)

No cream makes wet cement safe on bare skin. Waterproof gloves and a fast rinse come first.

Questions construction crews ask

Sunscreen for construction workers: FAQ

What kind of sunscreen is I.C. Industrial Sunscreen?
It’s a hybrid formula: non-nano zinc oxide as a physical filter plus organic UV filters. It gives full broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection at SPF 36 and stays on through 80 minutes of sweat and water.
Will it leave a white cast or make my hands greasy?
No. It rubs in clear, dries non-greasy and is odorless, and it’s made to stay put instead of running into your eyes.
What’s in the insect repellent?
I.C. Insect Repellent uses EPA-registered IR3535 and protects against mosquitoes and ticks for up to 8 hours. It’s odorless and tested to ASTM D120 / F2621 for lineman gloves and FR clothing.
How do I use Ivy Block?
Put it on before you go into the brush, like sunscreen, on all exposed skin. It dries quickly. Afterward, wash the plant oil off with I.C. Ivy Cleanse.
Can our company get samples?
Yes. Request free samples for your crews. You can buy through your distributor or on GSA.
