Oil & Gas

Hand cleaner for oil and gas workers

Crude, grease and drilling mud in every crease, then sun, bugs and brush on the lease. Oilfield skin care goes way past a bucket of hand cleaner. We make the heavy-duty cleaners and the outdoor protection that keep you on the rig, not at the clinic.

What a hitch does to your skin

Oil, chemicals and the elements, every shift

Offshore platforms, rigs and drilling sites are hard on skin. Here’s where the damage comes from, and what helps.

Problem 01

Oil that won’t come off

Crude, grease and tar work deep into the pores. Harsh solvent cleaners get it off and take your skin with it, until your hands crack and bleed.

Skin care do’s and don’ts →
Problem 02

Heat and sun on the lease

Long hitches in open country mean hard sun and heat stress. Sunscreen that sweats off in an hour isn’t doing the job.

Heat stress: recognize, prevent, treat →
Problem 03

Bugs and poison ivy at remote sites

Wet ground, brush and remote pads bring mosquitoes, ticks and poisonous plants. You can’t drive two hours to town over a rash.

Field Notes

What the oilfield does to your skin

Five short animated chapters: the work, the exposure, what happens in the skin, why we built the product, and how to use it on the job.

Education, not medical advice. Your PPE program and each product’s label come first. If your hands crack, bleed or won’t settle down, or a spot on your skin changes, see a clinician.

CaptionA day on the lease: hard sun over the pad, crude and grease on the hands, and the nearest sink back at the doghouse or miles down the road.

01 · The work

Crude in every crease

Floorhands, roustabouts, pumpers and well techs work in it all day: crude, grease, tar and drilling mud on the hands, and long hitches in open country under hard sun. On a remote pad, the nearest sink can be the doghouse or miles down the lease road.

Wet ground and brush at remote sites bring mosquitoes, ticks and poison ivy too, and you can’t drive two hours to town over a rash.

UV rays can get through clouds and even glass, so overcast days and the truck cab still count.R&R Lotion, Skin Cancer white paper (2024), Importance of Sunscreen and Types of UV Radiation

CaptionCrude and grease sit on the skin’s outer layer: skin cells (bricks) held together by natural oils and lipids (the yellow mortar). A harsh solvent cleaner takes the crude off, and takes some of the mortar with it.

02 · The barrier

The cleaner takes your skin with it

  • Crude and grease
  • Solvent cleaner
  • Skin cells
  • Oils and lipids

The outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, is made of dead skin cells held together by natural oils and lipids. Picture bricks and mortar. The mortar holds moisture in and keeps irritants out.

Crude, tar and grease work deep into the creases and around the nails. Harsh solvent cleaners dissolve oil, and they don’t stop at the crude. They strip the skin’s own oils too. Do that every tour and the mortar wears thin.

CaptionWith the mortar worn thin, moisture escapes, irritants work their way in, and the skin underneath reddens and cracks.

03 · What develops

Dry, cracked, then dermatitis

  • Water escaping
  • Irritants

Keep exposing skin to harsh substances and the barrier breaks down. That’s irritant contact dermatitis. It starts as redness, itching and dryness, and it can progress to cracking and blistering.

Cracked hands sting, slow you down on the floor, and are harder to get clean on the next wash-up, so the cycle feeds itself.

There’s a second type, allergic contact dermatitis, where skin becomes sensitized to something it touches. If your hands won’t settle down, get them looked at.

On the job, contact dermatitis shows up on the hands in about 80% of cases.Occupational contact dermatitis, as reported on the R&R Lotion blog (2023)

CaptionStep one: a heavy-duty cleaner with micro scrubbers lifts crude, tar and grease off the skin. Step two: a dimethicone skin protectant goes on as a light layer over chapped hands.

04 · Why we built it

Built for the rig floor

Oilfield hands need a cleaner strong enough for crude and tar, a way to clean up when there’s no water on the pad, and something for hands that are chapped from all of it. Plus a sunscreen that holds up through a hot hitch.

I.C. Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner

Tough on grime, tough on germs. Micro scrubbers work into the creases and around the nails to lift tar, oil, grease, carbon, sap, ink and adhesives. Benzalkonium chloride 0.13% helps eliminate germs while you wash. No silicones, lanolin or mineral oil.

I.C. Antibacterial Waterless Hand Cleaner

No water on the pad? Apply, scrub with the micro scrubbers, towel off. Removes grease, dirt and grime without water. Made with benzalkonium chloride to help remove germs from your hands. Cleans, sanitizes, remoisturizes.
